Maria Sharapova got a little help in winning her first title since returning from shoulder surgery, raising the cup after opponent Jelena Jankovic retired with a right wrist injury trailing 2-5 in the first set. “It was my second final of the year and I was a bit nervous,” said the unseeded Sharapova. “But I played well enough this week to know I could give her a good match. I just wanted to keep fighting out there and unfortunately Jelena had to stop.”
Sharapova missed nine months of play from August 2008 to May 2009 due to a prolonged recovery from surgery that had many doubting if she could every return to form. “To go from not knowing whether you’ll ever play the sport again to holding a trophy, it’s an unbelievable feeling” Sharapova said. “You realize what a gift it is to hit a tennis ball. I’ve put in so much work and this is just exciting.”
